Saffron is the most expensive spice in the world! It comes from the stigmas of the saffron crocus! Hundreds of thousands of stigmas make up just one kilo of saffron. Due to the delicate nature of the plant, picking saffron is a painstaking task and this contributes to the costly price.
Rich in aroma and rich in colour, saffron is used in dishes from all over the world including Spanish paellas, Indian biryanis and an Italian risotto. Saffron not only brings fabulous flavours to a dish but also adds a deep and rich colour.
Saffron is a spice derived from the flower of Crocus sativus, commonly known as the “saffron crocus”. The vivid crimson stigmas and styles, called threads, are collected and dried to be used mainly as a seasoning and colouring agent in food.
